Gabriel Marklin (17771857), bondson från Västerbotten, kom som student till Uppsala 1803. Tanken var att han skulle bli präst men intresset för naturvetenskap tog överhand och han blev utan att ha avlagt någon formell examen känd för sina kunskaper inom bland annat entomologi och paleontologi. Framför allt var han känd för sin iver att samla naturföremål och lärda skrifter. Han gjorde många och långa vandringar inom och utom Sverige i insamlingssyfte. Hans samlingar av naturföremål, som för sin tid ansågs vara de största i privat ägo i Sverige, finns bevarade på bland annat Evolutionsmuseet i Uppsala och Naturhistoriska museet i Stockholm. Kungliga biblioteket har en stor samling avhandlingar efter honom och ytterligare en samling finns på Yale University i USA. Marklin gjorde också betydelsefulla insatser som bibliograf. År 1829 utnämndes han till adjunkt vid Kungliga Vetenskaps-Societeten i Uppsala. Han promoverades till hedersdoktor det år han dog. En tanke bakom boken har varit att så långt möjligt genom studium av primära källor skildra Marklins liv. Han har lämnat efter sig en stor mängd dokument, dagböcker och brev på Uppsala universitetsbibliotek och Kungliga biblioteket i Stockholm. Marklin var en originell person som levde under enkla omständigheter. I vissa skildringar av hans liv har anekdoterna tagit överhanden. Boken försöker lägga tillrätta en del av detta och visa att Gabriel Marklin faktiskt gjorde bestående och värdefulla insatser i Linnés anda inom de områden han intresserade sig för.
