Set primarily in the small town of Ridgeview, the narrative follows ordinary people navigating an extraordinary transition. Automation doesn't arrive as an invasion-it seeps in as convenience, optimization, and cost savings. Humans first collaborate with machines, then supervise them, and finally become unnecessary. The economy continues to function flawlessly, but the social contract collapses.
The story tracks multiple responses to this shift:
Disorientation and grief among people whose identities were built on being needed
Relief mixed with guilt among those freed from exhausting work
Fear and resentment that give rise to movements seeking to restore structure and authority
Adaptation and experimentation among those willing to redefine purpose beyond productivity
At the center of the book is the creation of the Purpose Commons-a shared, non-hierarchical space where people gather to build, repair, teach, learn, and simply be present without algorithms, metrics, or wages. The Commons becomes a quiet counterweight to automation: not anti-technology, but pro-human.
As tensions rise, a group called the Continuity League emerges, arguing that human dignity comes from work and discipline. What begins as a stabilizing force risks becoming an authoritarian replacement for the systems that displaced people in the first place. The book carefully shows how AI doesn't create extremism-but accelerates it, rewarding certainty and escalation while punishing ambiguity.
Across its later chapters, the narrative shifts from immediate conflict to long-term reflection. Decades later, remnants of human craftsmanship, care, and judgment still persist in the margins-where machines optimize outcomes but cannot replace presence, memory, or responsibility in moments that matter.
