The Suppliants is a play written by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides. The play tells the story of fifty women, known as the Danaids, who are seeking refuge in Argos after fleeing from their homeland in Egypt. The women are being pursued by their cousins, the sons of Aegyptus, who want to marry them against their will. The Danaids plead with the Argive king, Pelasgus, to protect them and allow them to stay in Argos. However, Pelasgus is hesitant to take them in as he fears the wrath of the sons of Aegyptus. The play explores themes of gender, power, and the conflict between familial duty and personal freedom. It is considered one of Euripides' lesser-known works but has been praised for its strong female characters and its commentary on the treatment of women in ancient Greek society.THESEUS Adrastus, and ye dames from Argos sprung, ye see these children bearing in their hands the bodies of their valiant sires whom I redeemed; to thee I give these gifts, I and Athens. And ye must bear in mind the memory of this favour, marking well the treatment ye have had of me. And to these children I repeat the self-same words, that they may honour this city, to children's children ever handing on the kindness ye received from us.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
