October 14, 1943; 291 B-17 Flying Fortresses are 20,000 feet over the Ball Bearing Factory in the City of Schweinfurt Germany. Up lies ahead is a day of darkness for the 8th Air Force. Countless German Luftwaffe fighters hide behind the glare of the sun, and constant air bursting flak fire tear gapping holes in B 17s. Fate is fickle, and fate decides who comes home safely, and who never sees home again. One particular B-17, on it's maiden mission, A Sunny Place affectionately named after ball turret gunner Eddie Smith's notebook, and the crew's lucky charm is struggling under the intense aerial bombardment from the German air defenses. After taking significant damage, it seems A Sunny Place is doomed, because fate decides who lives, and who dies, but little does fate understand, Eddie Smith is a talented writer, a writer with a fantastical imagination, and there's a reason why the crew's lucky charm is Eddie's special notebook.
