The Sulcata tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata), also known as the African spurred tortoise, is one of the largest species of tortoise in the world and the largest mainland tortoise species overall. Native to the southern edge of the Sahara Desert in Africa, their range spans several countries, including Chad, Sudan, Mali, Niger, and Ethiopia. This arid belt, known as the Sahel, is characterized by long dry seasons, sparse vegetation, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Sulcatas have evolved remarkable adaptations to survive in such harsh conditions. They are primarily crepuscular-most active during early mornings and late afternoons-to avoid the peak desert heat. In their native environment, they dig burrows that can be several meters long and reach cooler, more humid soil layers, helping them regulate their body temperature and avoid dehydration.
