Every parent of a dog-loving child knows the moment: your child spots a dog and wants to run over to say hello, while you're trying to slow everything down and make sure it's safe. Finding the right dog safety book to help, however, just got easier as readers follow Sugarmint, the dog, as he learns that understanding boundaries is the key to building trust and friendships.
What Children Will Learn:
- Safer social interactions with dogs depending on their comfort level
- How to ask for consent to pet or not to pet a dog
- How to recognize a dog's body language
- Empathy by seeing the world through a dog's eyes
- Problem-solving through patience and understanding
- Social-emotional skills that extend beyond dog interactions
Sugarmint's story transforms those uncertain greetings into confident ones. Instead of teaching dog safety through a list of dos and don'ts, children can connect with two different characters, Sugarmint and Marigold. They can empathize with Sugarmint's excitement when his friendly greetings aren't returned, or Marigold's need for personal space when her boundaries aren't respected. Readers naturally learn the skills that lead to safer, more respectful interactions between children and dogs.
Written by an experienced dog trainer and parent, this beautifully illustrated picture book also includes a practical parent and caregiver guide with simple conversation starters and tips parents can use for real-life dog greetings.
If you're looking for a children's book that teaches dog safety through connection instead of fear, this is the story your family will read again and again.
What if the key to making a new friend isn't chasing them but giving them the space to come to you?
