Excerpt: ... The sufferings of Our Lord Jesus Christ Thomas (of Jesus) THE following translation was made by a. Gentleman for his own use only, in order f to pass his time agreeably by that exercise, and to entertain his mind with such proper thoughts and sentiments, as the time and place wherein he was required. The fame is now published in order to do service to others; and if the work happens to please, he shall think his labour well bellowed. The book was.partly translated into English some time ago by R. Welion, D. D. and printed Anno 1721$ what still remained untranslated DEGREES chiefly engaged the foiementioned Gentleman to translate the whole.' . Much cannot be said in commendation of Dr. Wehoris translation, because of his frothy and too 4 affected pompous stile, improper expressions, am! many times running out into a great abundance of words, sometimes different from the meaning: 2-nd fense of the Author. He does not indeed wilfully, or out of any bad view, depart from the Author's meaning; he has even left in their full force, the expressions in the addresses to the B. Virgin, Angels, and Saints at the end of the Contemplations; and he brags ot having translated more honestly and faithfully than many others do. The present Translator does not pretend to prefer his translation to Dr. Welton's, but only fays, that he has endeavoured to keep as near as he could to what he translated from; and to give it in the language and expressions he thought proper and decent for the subject.
