Most substitute binders you can buy are empty. Blank tabs, blank forms, and a note wishing you luck. This one has the forms and the work.
Part One is yours to fill in. Fifteen pages built for secondary, not relabeled from elementary. The full bell schedule including block, minimum, and assembly days. A Period Page for every section you teach, each with its own roster, its own helpers, and its own two or three students who need a heads-up. Bell work, attendance, hall passes, the phone rule, referral procedure, and what your school expects a substitute to do when a class goes sideways. Twenty-five minutes at the start of the year and you never do it again.
Part Two is already written. Twenty-five complete days. Ten of middle school ELA and fifteen of science across sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. Every day opens with a page written for the substitute, then the student pages, then an answer key at the end of that section.
The ELA days:
- Five days of original short fiction, one per day, each a different genre and a different reading skill
- Every fiction day ships in a Standard and a Supported Version - same story, chunked into five labeled parts with margin tasks, a word box, a story map, and sentence starters
- Five days of original nonfiction with numbered paragraphs, eight text-dependent questions, and a written response with sentence starters for students who freeze
The science days: five each for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. Passages, data tables, claim-evidence-reasoning frames, and graphing work. No lab, no materials, no science background needed by whoever is standing in front of the room.
What makes this different from a blank binder:
- No prep. No devices, no projector, no textbook, no internet, nothing to cut or laminate.
- Nothing assumes where your classes are in the year. Every day is standalone work, never new instruction.
- Days are independent, so a substitute can start anywhere and a second substitute later in the year picks up whichever days are left.
- Answer keys are never printed on a student page. They sit at the end of each section so a hurried copy job cannot hand answers to your class.
- Photocopy permission for your own classroom is included.
- Printed at full 8.5 x 11 inches, so every page copies at 100 percent. Nothing to enlarge or reduce.
- 244 pages, black and white on white paper.
Nobody plans to be out. That is the whole problem this book solves. Fill in Part One, copy two or three days you would actually leave, and put it in a folder marked SUB PLANS on the desk. The morning you wake up sick becomes a phone call instead of an ordeal.
