What Idumean friend had he? Ans. Antipater. Scaurus, the Roman General, was Governor of Syria; Aretas was King of Arabia Petrea; and Hyrcanus 11. was Prince of Judaea; i.e., including Idumea, Samaria, Galilee, and the beyond Jordan. It was to Antipater that Hyrcanus and the Pharisees owed their present power. Who, in 57 B.C., marched an army against Hyrcanus? Ans. Alexander, the eldest son of Aristobulus. What was the result? Ans. Alexander was defeated by Gabinius and Mark Antony. Gabinius was Governor of Syria, and Mark Antony his lieutenant. Hyrcanus was confirmed in the high-priesthood: but the form of government was changed for a time to an aristocracy; the country was divided into five districts, each of which was governed by an executive council.
