What makes a society viable-not merely functional?

Advanced societies can continue to operate while the conditions that sustain long-term human cooperation gradually weaken. Institutions still process cases. Labour markets still allocate work. Households still function. Metrics may even improve. Yet beneath that continuity, load can become increasingly concentrated, buffering can thin, coordination costs can rise, and the capacity for repair and intergenerational transmission can deteriorate.
