The String of Pearls is a novel written by George Payne Rainsford James in 1849. The story is set in 1785 and revolves around the disappearance of a sailor named Sweeney Todd. The novel follows the investigation of his disappearance by his fianc�����e Joanna Oakley and a young lawyer named Thornhill. As the investigation progresses, they discover that Todd was murdered by a barber named Signor Pietro who had a secret partnership with a pie maker named Mrs. Lovett. Together, they have been killing Todd's customers and using their bodies to make pies, which they sell to unsuspecting customers. The novel is known for its gruesome and macabre descriptions of the murders and the pie-making process. It also explores themes of revenge, greed, and the corrupting influence of power. The String of Pearls has been adapted into numerous stage plays, musicals, and films, including the well-known Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
