Cowboy, a sixteen-year-old kicked out by Children's Aid, is forced into Ottawa's youth shelter system. He's adopted by a street family - Tweet, Care-Bear, and Screech - who teach him how to survive. After earning respect by standing his ground, Cowboy becomes responsible for protecting their stash.
Trouble escalates when Razor betrays the group to Brick, a violent older youth. Brick attacks Cowboy and destroys his hat, trying to provoke a street war. Cowboy refuses revenge, choosing strategy and unity instead, which unexpectedly earns him influence and causes Brick to back off.
During a brutal -40 C Christmas night, Cowboy is kicked out of the shelter and nearly freezes. The next morning, he returns to Children's Aid and begs to go home. They agree. Cowboy survives the streets - and escapes them.
