Strange Welcomes: Five Stories of the Unexpected
Some doors shouldn't be opened. You'll open them anyway.
Strange Welcomes is a collection of five standalone short stories and novellas that explore what happens when ordinary life quietly cracks open to let something stranger in - a motel that shouldn't exist, a forgotten childhood toy that evolves into something extraordinary, a corporate retirement plan with a sinister catch, a window that breaks at exactly the wrong moment, and an imaginary friend who never really left. Each story stands alone, but together they form a single theme: the unsettling, often tender moment when an invitation arrives from somewhere you didn't expect, and you have to decide whether to step through.
In Memory Lane Inn, a long-haul traveler stumbles onto a roadside motel that doesn't appear on any map, where a mysterious innkeeper and a coin-operated machine in Room 7 promise to show guests exactly what they've spent years avoiding. It's a slow-burn supernatural mystery with a Twilight Zone sensibility - equal parts atmospheric dread and quiet emotional reckoning.
Alice and Leo follows a gentle, long-married couple whose suburban routine - baseballs through the picture window, lemonade for the neighborhood kids - takes an unexpected turn when an ordinary accident reveals something the two of them never expected to find hiding in plain sight. A cozy, character-driven story with a twist of magical realism and a warm, bittersweet heart.
The Pension Packet, a guest contribution from author Nolan Redd, is a sharp corporate satire about a fictional company's too-good-to-be-true retirement reward: an all-inclusive island paradise for loyal employees of thirty years or more. Told with deadpan humor and mounting unease, it's a dark comedy about loyalty, complicity, and what companies are really willing to do to their most devoted workers.
The Sea Monkeys reimagines the classic 1970s novelty toy as the origin of a hidden, sentient civilization living beneath the Mariana Trench. When a marine biologist accidentally reawakens a forgotten lab sample, he discovers an evolved species asking humanity for help leaving a dying ocean - a hopeful, wonder-filled science fiction short story about memory, first contact, and the things we create without ever understanding what they might become.
Winks closes the collection with a comedic, emotionally sincere story about a lonely middle-aged man whose childhood imaginary friend reappears one morning, very much alive, very much annoyed at being forgotten for forty years - and determined to fix everything wrong with the life his old friend built without him.
Blending speculative fiction, quiet horror, science fiction, satire, and heartfelt character drama, Strange Welcomes is the first volume in a planned three-part Special Edition series from Fitz & Chapt Productions, the creative imprint of author Patrick Francis Fitzgerald. Fans of anthology collections, Twilight Zone-style speculative short fiction, The Twilight Zone, Black Mirror, Ray Bradbury-inspired story collections, and heartfelt science fiction with a satirical edge will find something to love in every story in this volume.
Whether you read it in one sitting or one story at a time, Strange Welcomes invites you to step through five very different doors - and discover that the strangest welcomes are often the ones that change you the most.
