Cat-excommunicating vicars, cycling curates, and the invention of the power loom-welcome to the eccentric world of the British clergy.
The parish churches of Great Britain are famous for their quiet beauty, soaring spires, and centuries of history. But behind the stained-glass windows and rectory garden walls lived some of the most delightfully eccentric, inventive, and colorful characters in British history. For centuries, the country vicarage was a breeding ground for brilliant oddballs, pioneering scientists, passionate sports leaders, and fiercely independent thinkers who left an indelible mark on the nation.
In Strange Tales of the British Clergy, you will step past the church door to explore the warm, witty, and endlessly fascinating side of clerical life. From the West Country vicar who wore a pink bishop's hat and formally excommunicated his cat for Sunday mouse-catching, to the Scottish minister who invented the percussion cap between wildfowling trips, this captivating collection gathers the most wonderful, authentic oddities in parish history.
Relying strictly on verified parish registries, 18th-century diaries, and historical biographies, this book celebrates the humor, resourcefulness, and unique charm of Britain's men and women of the cloth.
Step into the rectory and discover:
The Vicar Who Excommunicated His Cat: The legendary Reverend Hawker of Morwenstow and his hilarious parish decrees.
The Sinking Church of St Enodoc: The parson who had to be lowered through a roof hatch every year just to collect his tithes.
The Skating Minister of Duddingston: The Edinburgh minister immortalized on ice in his formal top hat and coat.
The Inventor of Thomas the Tank Engine: How the Reverend W.V. Awdry turned his love of steam railways into a global children's classic.
Perfect for history lovers, Church history buffs, fans of British humor, and curious readers everywhere, this book is your ultimate guide to the delightful, eccentric heart of the British parish.
Pull up a wicker chair on the rectory lawn, and enjoy the story!
