Straight-Stitch Sewing Machines - Volume 1 is a practical troubleshooting guide for domestic and industrial straight-stitch machines, including mechanical, electronic, and automatic models.
The book teaches a systematic way to diagnose sewing problems: observe the symptom, reproduce it under controlled conditions, establish a reliable reference, change one variable at a time, compare the result, and keep an adjustment only when the evidence supports it.
The first part of the diagnostic path explains how the machine and lockstitch system work and how problems involving the upper thread, bobbin, needle, tension, hook capture, and stitch formation can be separated from one another.

- how to build a useful diagnostic test;
- failure to form a stitch or pick up the bobbin thread;

The second part follows the problem into fabric feeding and the finished seam. It examines what happens when the machine forms stitches but the material no longer moves or behaves as expected.

The book also maintains a clear safety boundary. Threading, needle and bobbin changes, accessible tension and pressure controls, cleaning, and user-configurable functions are treated as operator-level work. Internal timing, hook position, synchronization, electronics, sensors, and other technical interventions are identified as service territory.
