Beneath the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem lies a single piece of stone. Pilgrims of three faiths have venerated it for two thousand years. Jewish tradition names it as the Foundation Stone, the rock from which the world was created and around which the Holy of Holies stood. Christian tradition holds it as the threshold of the Temple. Islamic tradition records it as the rock from which the Prophet ascended on his Night Journey. Three religions share it. None has ever explained where it actually came from.
This book argues that the Foundation Stone is travertine - a cold-spring mineral deposit not native to the Levantine geology - and that it was carried to Jerusalem from the Afar Depression of East Africa, the prediluvian sacred landscape preserved in the Hebrew, Greek, and Mesopotamian records as the original location of paradise. Jerusalem's Holy of Holies was not the first sanctuary. It was the second. The first stood ten thousand years earlier in the African highlands, at the centre of the kingdom whose memory the post-flood civilisations have transmitted under many names - Eden, Dilmun, Atlantis, the Garden of the Hesperides - and whose foundation stone, removed from its original setting, was carried north along the same migration corridor that brought the Covenant tradition itself.
Drawing on geological analysis of travertine formation, archaeological evidence of cold-spring shrine sites in the Afar, Egyptian and Mesopotamian temple-foundation theology, and the layered Jewish-Christian-Islamic literary tradition surrounding the stone, this book recovers a sacred history that the three Abrahamic traditions have preserved in fragmentary form without recognising the underlying unity. The stone beneath the Dome is not a metaphor. It is a recovered piece of the original kingdom - the literal Foundation Stone of the lost Zion that Jerusalem has been remembering for three millennia.
