The Stewardship Civilization, Volume 5: The Covenant is a theological and moral examination of human power in an age of accelerating technology. The volume argues that the decisive question is not whether humanity can acquire godlike capability, but whether it can remain morally and spiritually fit to wield such power. Its central concern is the creature-Creator boundary: human beings may exercise vast delegated authority, but they do not become divine, and any vision of technological progress must remain subordinate to that truth.
The book begins by confronting a recurring misuse of Psalm 82, especially the phrase you are gods. It carefully reviews the major interpretive traditions surrounding the text, including the divine council reading and the human-rulers reading, and concludes that neither supports human self-deification. On either interpretation, the gods are judged, subordinate, and mortal. The chapter then shows how this verse has been misread as a warrant for apotheosis, especially in modern technological culture, where artificial intelligence, radical longevity, and other powers tempt humanity to imagine itself as transcending creaturely limits. The point of the opening chapter is clear: the psalm does not authorize divinity; it warns against pride, abuse of power, and forgetting one's place before God.
From there, the book turns to Genesis 1:26 and the doctrine of dominion. It rejects the familiar exploitative reading that treats human dominion over creation as a license for mastery, extraction, or domination. Instead, it argues that dominion is stewardship: the role of a gardener, not a tyrant. Genesis 2 reinforces this by placing humanity in the garden to till and to keep it, verbs that point to service, preservation, and cultivation. Human beings are therefore image-bearers whose authority is real, but whose authority exists for the flourishing of creation, not for its abuse.
A major theological development in the volume is the idea of participation in divine rule. Drawing on magisterial Catholic teaching, especially the International Theological Commission's Communion and Stewardship and Pope Francis's Laudato Si', the book argues that human stewardship is a genuine share in God's governance of creation. This participation preserves both dignity and dependence: humans truly rule, but they do so derivatively, by gift, and in alignment with God's benevolent order. The model is not ownership but entrusted administration.
The book applies this framework to biotechnology, AI, gene editing, longevity science, and space expansion. In each case, the same distinction appears:
Throughout, the volume insists that power amplifies moral identity. Technology does not create character; it magnifies what is already there. A just society is therefore not built only by better tools, but by better formation: worship, community, narrative, discipline, and moral training. The final chapters suggest that a stewardship civilization requires institutions that preserve truth, distribute power, resist concentration, and keep human judgment sovereign over machine execution. The book ultimately offers a spiritual-political architecture for an age of advanced technology: one in which greatness is defined not by domination, but by faithful service under God.
