Maria Diaz, a young intellectual, originally from Ecuador, teaches math in Miami and is aghast at discovering that we sleep one third of our lives. By the time we are 60, we will have slept 20 years. This is a colossal waste. Could dreams be its redeeming value? They could, if we could remember them. But we don't.
Sleep memory is our shortcoming and there is nothing we can do about it. We sleep for hours but remember only minutes of our dreams. Yet, it is in these hours that Maria discovers her inner self, her id, libido, ego, conscience, guilt, memory, imagination, muses and oracles. They come alive night after night as colorful human characters, going over the day's events, teasing, critiquing, at times fighting. Her libido deplores Maria being virgin at the age of 26. Her Mathematics muse wants her to go for a PhD. Her muse of poetry wants Maria to change fields. They want to control more than just her dreams. They want to control her life, her destiny.
Maria keeps logs, analyzing dreams until she finally connects all the dots. She finds ways to steal her dreams and recoups part of her life lost to sleep. The result is this novel, set in 1999, capturing the end of a century and the blooming of a new millennium.
