Algeria entered the third millennium with insufficient water resources (less than 500 m3 per capita per year). This situation hinders socioeconomic development. The economic upturn that had characterized the country opened up new horizons marked by ambitious projects. However, water management was flawed due to the overly social perspective that had prevailed until then in the formulation of the various policies implemented. The fundamental problem that must be addressed immediately lies in water management-to manage it, conserve it, and distribute it more effectively. Furthermore, the physical condition of our dams is compromised by low water levels, siltation, and pollution. This situation leads us to consider solutions that are sometimes realistic and feasible, and at other times bold and futuristic-yet indispensable-solutions that have already been implemented elsewhere, for the future of the country and of future generations is at stake. This falls within the framework of sustainable development, a cornerstone of all societies that cherish their heritage and are concerned about their future.
