Stanford in Haus Cramer: A Berlin Microhistory retraces the building of modernity through a legendary house commissioned by a family whose culture guides the reader into a tumultuous century of technological and political upheaval. The account commences before the world wars in German-Jewish Berlin then proceeds along a German-American trajectory, following the family into American exile and Stanford University to Cold War Berlin. The account spans phenomena as varied as first-wave feminism, the rise of competitive sport, and the genius loci of the site, which melds a famed early twentieth century Prussian science park with Stanford University.
