Standish James O'Grady, the Man & the Writer is a comprehensive biographical and critical study of the influential Irish author and historian often hailed as the father of the Irish Literary Revival. Written by Hugh Art O'Grady, this work examines the life and intellectual legacy of a figure whose romanticized depictions of Ireland's heroic past ignited a new sense of national identity and inspired a generation of writers, including W.B. Yeats and George Russell (AE).
The book explores O'Grady's dual role as both a meticulous chronicler of Irish history and a passionate literary force. It delves into his landmark interpretations of ancient legends and his efforts to revive interest in Gaelic heritage during a period of intense cultural transition. Through a detailed analysis of his major works and personal motivations, the volume provides essential context for understanding the evolution of modern Irish literature and the political undercurrents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This study serves as a vital resource for readers interested in the intersection of literature, history, and the shaping of a nation's cultural consciousness.
