Preparations for a film involve a great deal of organisational and creative work. The cinematographer often finds themselves faced with the same questions. What should the film look like? What style and visual language should it have? What should be planned in advance, and what should be left to intuition? This book examines the role of the cinematographer and their self-perception, as well as their collaboration with the director. It sheds light on their activities and the challenges they face during various phases and aspects of the entire film-making process. The author examines the interplay between technology and design, preparation in relation to the script, the development of visual ideas and their realisation, the drawing of inspiration and creative energy, and explores the question of whether a cinematographer needs their own style or 'signature'. In doing so, he draws on an extensive body of literature, supplementing it with interviews he conducted himself with cinematographers Sonja Rom (The Days to Come, Ruby Red), Michael Hammon (Half a Stair, Cloud 9) and Jakub Bejnarowicz (Mercy, Wetlands), and relates these to his own experiences.
