Saint John Chrysostom's Homilies on the Statues: A Study of Their Rhetorical Qualities and Form provides a deep academic examination of one of the most powerful oratorical sequences in early Christian history. Delivered in 387 A.D. during a period of intense civic unrest in Antioch following the destruction of imperial images, these homilies represent a masterpiece of late antique communication. This study explores the technical and stylistic elements that define Chrysostom's mastery, focusing on how he utilized the tools of classical Greek education to serve a Christian pastoral purpose.
The work analyzes the formal structure, linguistic patterns, and rhetorical devices employed by the Golden-Mouthed preacher to console a city living under the threat of imperial execution. By dissecting the metaphors and sophistical influences within the text, the study illuminates the synthesis of traditional Hellenic oratory and biblical exegesis. This analysis is an essential resource for scholars of patristics, classical philology, and ecclesiastical history, offering a comprehensive look at the development of sacred oratory during a pivotal moment in the Fourth Century. Saint John Chrysostom's Homilies on the Statues: A Study of Their Rhetorical Qualities and Form remains a vital contribution to the understanding of ancient preaching and the enduring literary value of John Chrysostom's work.
