Successful to the world but lost to himself, Mladen becomes the emblem of a man who never quite belongs to his own life-always what others need him to be. In taut, unadorned scenes Stankovic maps the border between identity and duty, family honor and personal desire, love and renunciation. The novel's fragmentary state-its abrupt edges and ellipses-only sharpens the psychological intensity, lending the book a haunting, elegiac power.
