Squirrel monkeys, belonging to the genus Saimiri, are among the most agile and charismatic primates of Central and South American rainforests. They are small-bodied New World monkeys, typically weighing between 0.5 and 1.1 kilograms (1.1-2.4 lbs) and measuring 25-35 cm in body length, with a tail often extending 35-45 cm. Their long, non-prehensile tail, though not used for gripping, serves as a crucial balancing tool while navigating the forest canopy.
Physically, squirrel monkeys are characterized by their short, dense fur that ranges from yellowish-orange to olive-gray on their back, while their underparts are typically lighter.
