One dark star. One cold snap. One county waiting.
For forty years, a lighted star has been placed on top of the Buck windmill every Christmas Eve, glowing for miles. All the neighbors say the same thing: Christmas starts when the Buck star comes on.
But this year, everything goes wrong at once. The star comes down from the loft with a bent point, dark bulbs, and a wire that isn't frayed - it's CHEWED (a real spy case! The culprit: one shiny-loving packrat, happily rehomed with a trade, because there are no villains at Christmas). Then Pawpaw's back goes TWANG, the radio promises a cold snap for Thursday... and Thursday is Christmas Eve.
Brynlee asks the question that decides everything: But how will Santa know where we are?
Operation Starlight is GO - and it takes every skill from every adventure: inventor thinking from the junk pile, hawk eyes to find a lost star point, neighbors rolling up the drive with spare bulbs (You've lit our way home for forty years. Our turn.), a windmill pulley towed by two pink jeeps, and Pawpaw teaching every knot from his porch chair, passing down forty years of knowing-how. When doubt creeps in with the sleet, Riley says the line the whole series has been building to: Spies don't ask what if we can't. We ask how we WILL.
And on Christmas Eve at dusk, Pawpaw doesn't flip the switch. He puts Brynlee's hand on it.
Then the whole dark county answers - porch lights blinking on one by one, like stars coming out on the ground.
