In a media landscape that too often marginalizes or distorts Black women, sports provide a rare space where their strength, beauty, and agency shine clearly and powerfully. From Angel Reese's unapologetic confidence to Serena and Venus Williams's iconic style on the tennis court to Simone Biles's gravity-defying brilliance, the women at the center of Sporting Divas: Black Womanhood, Empowerment, and Belonging offer transformative images of Black womanhood.

Grounded in Black feminist and womanist thought, Sporting Divas argues that Black women athletes are cultural producers whose presence pushes back against historical stereotypes and contemporary controlling images. Their bodies--and the narratives surrounding them--are sites of ideological struggle, where myths about Black womanhood are both reproduced and resisted. By examining athletes' lived experiences, public performances, and cultural representations, Africana Womanist studies scholar Ramona J. J. Bell reveals how they carve out self-defined, self-determined spaces of empowerment in a nation that has long questioned their belonging.

Rather than offering a sports history, the volume reads Black women athletes as texts of culture whose stories illuminate the intersections of race, gender, and nation. Sporting Divas celebrates women who talk back through their athletic brilliance, reclaiming the Black female body from narratives of shame and marginalization. In doing so, they reshape national consciousness and model a vision of America where Black women are visible, valued, and undeniably belong.
