The Spirit Still Speaks enters that uncomfortable middle ground.
Marvin Botts writes from decades of biblical study and firsthand experience in Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity, examining tongues, prophecy, interpretation, healing, words of knowledge, spiritual warnings, discernment of spirits, and other manifestations of the Holy Spirit with both faith and scrutiny.
This is neither a defense of every charismatic claim nor an argument that the gifts disappeared with the apostles. It is an investigation guided by Paul's command:
Do not quench the Spirit. Test everything. Hold fast what is good.
Along the way, the book asks difficult questions. Must every instance of tongues be an identifiable human language? What exactly is an interpretation? Can genuine spiritual perception be followed by mistaken human interpretation? Does a prophetic warning always mean do not go? Can the Holy Spirit communicate knowledge or meaning before ordinary words form? How should Christians distinguish spiritual experience from psychology, neurological processes, coincidence, learned behavior, or deception? And does Scripture really teach that miraculous gifts ceased?
Botts also confronts abuses within charismatic Christianity: exaggerated healing claims, failed prophecies, spiritual elitism, forced tongues, celebrity prophets, manipulation, and the damaging idea that Christians who do not speak in tongues are somehow second-class believers.
Yet he is equally unwilling to let skepticism become a theology that explains away every unusual work of God before the facts are heard.
Carefully argued, personal, occasionally humorous, and deeply rooted in Scripture, The Spirit Still Speaks offers what might best be called disciplined continuationism-a willingness to believe without becoming gullible and a willingness to investigate without becoming cynical.
Observe faithfully. Measure carefully. Conclude cautiously.
