Some people assume Cornwall is just another English county, they'll think of the its beautiful Mediterranean-like sandy beaches; the quaint seaside fishing villages; sun-bronzed surfers; TV shows set in the county, like Wycliffe, Poldark, and Doc Martin, and will know about our delicious Cornish cream teas, too! However, leaving aside for now the rather contentious idea that Cornwall is 'English, ' there's a lesser known, more mysterious, eldritch side to Cornwall, of which they may not yet be aware.
Cornwall has an abundance of weird tales to share, there are many strange stories about UFOs; ghosts; mermaids; knockers; piskies; spriggans; owl-men; sea-monsters; buccas; black moorland hounds; phantom trains, phantom planes, phantom cars, phantom ships, and, yes, even phantom bicycles! I hope you will enjoy exploring these odd stories that I've collected from my witnesses, the old folklore, and even a few of my own personal weird experiences, with me going on ahead as your guide, holding aloft an old Cornish miner's safety lamp to light up our way across those misty Cornish moors and cliff tops.
No other region of Britain packs such a diverse range of mysteries, history, legends, folklore, and artistic creativity into such a small area. Outside of London, Cornwall is reputed to be THE most haunted place in Britain, and I don't doubt it. She has always punched above her weight, perhaps it has something to do with the abundant presence of granite to be found under your feet here. Cornwall's anomalous activities are distinctive to her independent national identity, her traditions, customs, superstitions, and culture. Wherever possible, I have tried to match my witnesses' experiences to interesting background information, and known historical events, I've also tried to show some possible links between the old Cornish folklore handed down and modern ufology. In this first volume, we'll be in the eastern half of Cornwall, visiting some fascinating locations, including a top-secret government spy-base on a remote North Cornish cliff-top, an abandoned, haunted military airfield up on bleak Bodmin Moor, and various haunted pubs, cafes, and churches too. I will be discussing vibrant Cornish characters, people like the Stratton giant, Antony Payne; the eccentric parson, Robert Stephen Hawker; and even Daphne Du Maurier, the acclaimed novelist who based several of her best-known stories on Cornish places and characters. Over these two volumes of 'The Spirit of Cornwall: A Haunted Legacy' (vol 2 is available on Amazon too), you'll read about how the British military has pursued UFOs in Cornish air space, and of the latest, cutting-edge, technical developments in paranormal research, too. I discuss how modern quantum-science relates to the supernatural, and muse on the true nature of reality and consciousness.
