This is the speech of Hon. Justin S. Morrill, of Vermont, delivered in 1858, concerning the bill granting lands for the establishment of agricultural colleges. Morrill, a prominent figure in 19th-century American politics, eloquently argues the case for federal support of practical education, emphasizing its importance to the nation's economic and social development.
The speech offers valuable insights into the debates surrounding education, land use, and federalism in the antebellum United States. It showcases Morrill's vision for a system of higher education accessible to all citizens, irrespective of social class or geographic location. This historical document is essential for anyone interested in the history of American education, agricultural development, and the origins of the land-grant college system.
