Speculation: A Comedy, In Five Acts (1800) is a play written by Frederick Reynolds. The plot revolves around the character of Sir Christopher Cripple, a wealthy baronet who is desperate to find a way to increase his fortune. He becomes involved in a series of speculative schemes, including a plan to corner the market on a particular commodity, which leads to a series of misadventures and comic situations. The play is a satire on the financial speculation that was prevalent in the late 18th century, and it pokes fun at the greed and foolishness of those who were caught up in the frenzy of speculation. The characters in the play are all caricatures of various types of speculators, from the greedy and ruthless to the naive and gullible.Despite its comedic tone, the play also has a serious message about the dangers of speculation and the importance of financial prudence. It is a commentary on the excesses of capitalism and the need for individuals to take responsibility for their own financial decisions.Overall, Speculation: A Comedy, In Five Acts is a witty and entertaining play that provides a fascinating insight into the financial world of the late 18th century. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of finance and economics, as well as those who enjoy a good comedy. As It Is Performed At The Theater Royal, Covent Garden. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
