This is the continuing story of the Magen. The Wehrmacht officers, of Jewish heritage who established a resistance cell in Poland and how they successfully rescued 2,505 Jews fleeing the genocide and Nazi oppression. Many of their ranks later went on to serve in the nascent Israeli Defence Forces after the modern state of Israel was founded on 14 May 1948.
Yes, they made the return to Israel against all odds, all 2,505 of the refugees.
They came from the north, the east and west. They arrived in lorries, in horse-drawn carts, in overloaded cars, some trekked, others rode bicycles. A mass of humanity on the move. They were men and women and children of every persuasion. Doctors, chemists, farmers, lawyers, musicians, scientists and ordinary people. They were all heeding the call to return home. They sailed from the Port of Sevastopol on two barges. They arrived in Haifa in Israel and were attacked by waves of Arabs. But they prevailed.
