El eje del libro es una cuestión decisiva para la teologÃa oriental: en qué sentido puede el hombre ver o conocer a Dios? Lossky muestra que, para la tradición ortodoxa, Dios permanece incognoscible en su esencia, pero se comunica realmente al hombre por sus energÃas divinas. De este modo, la visión de Dios no consiste en una comprensión intelectual de la esencia divina, sino en una participación viva, personal y transformadora en la vida de Dios.
Por eso, el libro puede leerse como una introducción al palamismo: Lossky reconstruye la larga continuidad que une la teologÃa bÃblica y patrÃstica con la doctrina hesicasta defendida por san Gregorio Palamás. Su intención no es presentar el palamismo como una innovación tardÃa, sino como la maduración doctrinal de una tradición mucho más antigua.
Uno de los puntos más decisivos de la obra -y quizá uno de los más interesantes para el lector- es el modo en que Lossky muestra la Ãntima relación entre la visión de Dios y la theosis, o deificación, en la tradición cristiana oriental. Lossky sostiene en su desarrollo de la teologÃa hesicasta que la visión de Dios no puede entenderse como una mera contemplación intelectual ni como una aprehensión de la esencia divina, sino como una participación real en la vida divina, participación que transforma al hombre entero.
De ahà que Lossky insista en que la ausencia, dentro de la teologÃa latina occidental, de una distinción entre la esencia y las energÃas divinas llevó a una grave incomprensión del hesicasmo. Esta incomprensión queda de manifiesto desde el primer capÃtulo de la obra, y reaparece como cuestión de fondo en sus páginas finales. Para Lossky, el problema no se limita a una disputa terminológica: afecta directamente al modo mismo de entender la deificación. Allà donde no se distingue entre la esencia incomunicable de Dios y sus energÃas divinas comunicables, la theosis corre el riesgo de quedar reducida a una categorÃa moral, psicológica o puramente intelectual, perdiendo su sentido propiamente ortodoxo: la participación real del hombre en la vida divina.
Es por esto que esta obra también puede entenderse como una historia del desarrollo doctrinal dentro de la teologia de la distinción entre energias y esencia de Dios, distincion que Lossky ya detecta en los padres capadocios y que reoorre todo el desarrollo ulterior de la teologia cristiano ortodoxa.Also from
