Francisca Josefa del Castillo y Guevara (Nueva Granada, 1672-1714), escribió Su vida. Esta es una obra de carácter místico, que además de tener como antecedente las obras de Santa Teresa de Ávila, encuentra sus raíces en otros textos de mujeres religiosas.
Aún cuando su obra no es extensa, su legado es importante desde la época colonial, al mostrarse como una de las máximas representantes de la literatura mística.
Desde pequeña, Josefa del Castillo evidenció su gran vocación religiosa mediante su interés por las obras de sor Juana Inés de la Cruz y Santa Teresa de Jesús, quienes influirían en su producción literaria en la adolescencia.
Su vida fue escrita por sugerencia de su confesor, el padre Diego de Tapia, en el Real Convento de Santa Clara de la ciudad de Tunja. En general, las monjas escribían una autobiografía de sus experiencias místicas desde los más profundos padecimientos hasta las visiones que tenían, por sugerencia de sus guías espirituales.
Su vida, de la madre Josefa del Castillo, nace de una red de discursos y géneros literarios al uso a comienzos del siglo XVIII y de las relaciones históricamente determinadas entre la autora y otros sujetos, y entre ella y la sociedad neogranadina de su época. El texto es, entonces, la manifestación de una cultura católica, de procedencia oral, filtrada por el sueño y la visión y, en especial, por las palabras de confesores y predicadores; estas palabras vertidas a la escritura con recursos, metáforas y puestas en escena del teatro barroco tienen el propósito de develar, enmascarar y autorrepresentar los infortunios y los encuentros con Dios de una monja en el encierro en función de la moral práctica y el comportamiento, de la verdad y de la simulación. La narración, reveladora de una cultura aristocrática, ornamental, dogmática e imperialista que desafía a la Madre Castillo a buscar a través de la retórica del poder la voz para configurar su otredad o, mejor, su doble alteridad de mujer colonial, es el producto de esa práctica social legitimada que esconde una poética de lo no-dicho. La autora reescribe otras historias al imitar uno o varios modelos (ejemplarizantes, de control, de búsqueda de un yo) en un molde pautado; de esa manera, como sostiene Beatriz Ferrús, su escritura termina por no decir nada nuevo o casi nada: sólo enuncia aquello que puede y debe ser leído. Es preciso fracturar ese silencio impuesto, mirar en sus bordes, en el subtexto de la obra y en sus intersticios para descifrarla.
