Viajes por Filipinas es un libro de Juan Álvarez Guerra escrito en 1871 por encargo del gobernador general de Filipinas, Rafael Izquierdo. Esta obra contiene datos relevantes de carácter etnográfico, geográfico, histórico y político.
Juan Álvarez Guerra escribió tres libros de viajes sobre las islas. El primero lo tituló Un viaje por Oriente. De Manila a Marianas, publicado en Madrid en 1872 y reeditado en 1883 y 1887. Lo dedicó al general Rafael Izquierdo, gobernador general de Filipinas de 1871 a 1873, que le había encomendado un viaje científico por el Pacífico del que nació el libro. El segundo fue Viajes por Oriente. De Manila a Tabayas, publicado en Madrid en 1878 y reeditado en 1887.
Dedicado al político progresista Cristino Martos. Y, finalmente, Viajes por Filipinas. De Manila a Albay, publicado en Madrid en 1887 y dedicado al político liberal-conservador Germán Gamazo, que había sido ministro de Ultramar.
La experiencia filipina convirtió a Álvarez-Guerra en uno de los máximos conocedores en su tiempo de la realidad y la cultura de esas islas. A mediados de 1887 se encargó, como comisario regio, de organizar una exposición sobre Filipinas. Para esa muestra llegaron desde Manila cuarenta y tres personas indígenas, acompañadas de 4.000 plantas, dos toros, siete venados, varias serpientes, un carabao... La exposición la inauguró la reina Maria Cristina el 30 de junio de ese año.
Álvarez-Guerra preparó una instalación especial con las piezas y recuerdos de su colección particular que fue muy comentada por la prensa y los asistentes: libros sobre Filipinas, tejidos, bordados, una colección de moluscos, muestras de cuatrocientos tipos de madera, armas, etc.
