Desde selvas casi inaccesibles hasta desiertos, montañas, islas remotas, ciudades modernas y territorios donde las tradiciones ancestrales continúan formando parte de la vida cotidiana, este libro se adentra en una realidad tan fascinante como inquietante.
A lo largo de sus páginas aparecen pueblos de África, América, Asia, Europa y Oceanía que han conservado ceremonias de iniciación, rituales funerarios, prácticas espirituales, pruebas de resistencia y formas de organización social muy diferentes a las del mundo occidental. Pero este libro no pretende presentar a todos los pueblos como curiosidades exóticas ni confundir una tradición cultural con una organización sectaria. Cada capítulo busca observar, narrar y contextualizar. Detrás de cada rito existe una historia. Detrás de cada marca sobre la piel puede haber una identidad, un compromiso, un duelo o una forma de reconocimiento. Detrás de cada ceremonia hay símbolos que solo pueden comprenderse cuando se conoce el mundo que los creó.
En algunos casos, las prácticas descritas han desaparecido o se encuentran en transformación. En otros, continúan celebrándose, aunque adaptadas a nuevas leyes, religiones y formas de vida. Algunas han sido denunciadas por sus consecuencias físicas o psicológicas. Otras sobreviven como una forma de resistencia cultural frente a siglos de colonización, persecución o pérdida de territorio.
Las sectas ocupan también un lugar importante en este recorrido. Desde pequeños grupos espirituales hasta movimientos capaces de aislar a cientos de personas, el libro analiza los mecanismos que permiten a determinados líderes dominar la vida de sus seguidores: la promesa de una verdad exclusiva, la ruptura con la familia, la vigilancia, el castigo, la obediencia y el temor a abandonar el grupo. No siempre hay túnicas, símbolos extraños o ceremonias nocturnas. A veces, una secta puede ocultarse tras un discurso de bienestar, superación personal, religión, política o comunidad.
