No se trata de una biografÃa novelada ni de una exposición superficial, sino de un estudio de divulgación culta que sitúa al santo en su verdadero contexto histórico: la Rávena imperial, la Iglesia latina del siglo V, la herencia de Nicea y Éfeso, la crisis de Eutiques y el horizonte doctrinal que desembocarÃa en Calcedonia.
Conocido como Crisólogo, es decir, palabra de oro, Pedro no dejó grandes tratados sistemáticos como otros Padres de la Iglesia. Su obra principal son sus sermones: breves, intensos, doctrinales, litúrgicos y pastorales. En ellos aparece una teologÃa predicada, nacida del altar y dirigida al pueblo cristiano. Su palabra enseña el Credo, explica el Padrenuestro, ilumina la Encarnación, contempla a MarÃa en relación con el Verbo hecho carne, llama a la penitencia, une oración, ayuno y misericordia, y recuerda que la fe no se vive al margen de la Iglesia.
