Delightful and intelligent, this book recalls Europe before and after the French Revolution and details how modern republics were established, all through the lens of personal memories. Charles Victor de Bonstetten was 86 years old when he wrote these memoirs, and the critical, vehement spirit of 18th- and 19th-century European literary salons is expressed by seductive prose and charm. Sections about some of the era's most prominent figures, from Voltaire to Pope Clement XIV, together with a polished, clear analysis of Europe at that time, are written with humor and without judgment.
