--The Horn Book

Are you brave, little Annemarie?
It is 1943, and for Annemarie Johansen, life in Copenhagen is a complicated mix of ordinary days at home and at school, food shortages, and the constant presence of Nazi soldiers. Courage seems like a distant virtue, one that appears only in the fairy tales told to her younger sister Kirsti at bedtime.
When the Nazis begin to relocate all the Jews of Denmark, the Johansens take in Ellen, Annemarie's best friend, and pretend she is part of the family. The girls live like sisters until it becomes necessary to do something more to save Ellen, her family, and the Jews of Denmark.
In this story about the heroism of an entire nation, the tale of the Danish Resistance and its plan to secretly lead nearly seven thousand Danish Jews across the sea to Sweden is told with pride and hope through the eyes of a young girl.
A flawless, moving, and transcendent work: impossible to put down and difficult to forget. --The Horn Book
