La presente publicación es un curso básico de PatrologÃa. Está basada en las notas preparadas por el autor para sus alumnos de las clases de esa asignatura que impartió en su dÃa en el Seminario de San Bernardo de Chile. El cuerpo de estos apuntes está tomado de un curso publicado en Internet, de V. Cano Sordo.
Es un compendio de la vida obras y pensamiento de los grandes Santos Padres y Escritores Eclesiásticos de la Iglesia, estudiando su contexto histórico tanto civil como eclesiástico. Los datos de la presente obra están tomados de los estudios clásicos, famosos por su exposición clara, sistemática, completa y de trasfondo teológico ortodoxo (J. Quasten, D. Ramos-Lisson, Moliné, Flichè-Martin, Cano Sordo, D.T.C., GER, etc.). La exposición, está dividida en cinco grandes partes que abarcan: Introducción general; los Padres prenicenos (siglos I al III); los comienzos de la reflexión teológica (siglo III); la Edad de Oro de la patrÃstica (siglos IV y V); y la etapa final (siglos V al VIII). El libro se cierra con la Instrucción sobre el Estudio de los Padres de la Iglesia en la formación sacerdotal, de la Sagrada Congregación para la Educación Católica de 30-11-1989.
Sobre la estructura de la PatrologÃa de V. Cano, Juan A. Jorge incluyó sus propias lecturas en casi todos los capÃtulos, que quedaron más ampliados, y nueva bibliografÃa básica, donde se puede conseguir información segura sobre cada Santo Padre o autor eclesiástico. Es necesario hacer notar que muchos de los textos que van a aparecer en la presente obra pertenecen a esos apuntes. Se han quitado repeticiones y datos inexactos. Los capÃtulos dedicados a las herejÃas y el Magisterio, tanto en los primeros tiempos como en las controversias trinitarias y cristológicas, son nuevos, tomados de sus tratados de Dios Uno y Trino y de CristologÃa, vol. I. de Juan A. Jorge. También se introdujeron algunas divisiones y enumeraciones nuevas, asà como se cambió el orden del contenido de algunos de los capÃtulos, para hacerlo más adaptado a las necesidades académicas del autor, por lo que se suprimieron también, en algunos casos, parte de algunos contenidos. También aparecen incluidas citas de los textos originales de los Padres con más amplitud y profusión que las breves referencias que se encuentran en los apuntes del profesor Cano.
