La filosofÃa de Félix Varela forma parte de las primeras corrientes del pensamiento filosófico cubano integrado además por José AgustÃn Caballero y José de la Luz y Caballero.
Desde fines del siglo XVIII y hasta la segunda década del siglo XIX, en Cuba prevaleció el reformismo filosófico de José AgustÃn Caballero, el cual se encontraba en correspondencia con el reformismo polÃtico imperante en esa etapa. A diferencia de la etapa precedente netamente escolástica, esta se caracterizó por el incremento del interés por temas filosóficos, que sin romper aun definitivamente con el escolasticismo, abrieron con la crÃtica a este tipo de pensamiento, las puertas al pensamiento moderno.
Las primeras obras de Varela ya revelan la proyección ascendente de su pensamiento. En su primera obra Instituciones de FilosofÃa Ecléctica, publicada entre 1812 y 1814, se aprecia la huella de las enseñanzas de su maestro, el padre José AgustÃn Caballero. En Elenco Filosófico (1816), se percibe la influencia del empirismo francés del siglo XVIII. Las Lecciones de FilosofÃa y Miscelánea Filosófica corresponden a un perÃodo posterior y en ellas se evidencia la madurez y originalidad del pensamiento vareliano.
Las Lecciones fueron consideradas por mucho tiempo una de las mejores obras filosóficas escritas en español durante esta etapa. Pero la grandeza de las lecciones fue superada en madurez y profundidad polÃtica por sus Cartas a Elpidio (recogidas en este tercer volumen), de suerte y trascendencia muy distintas a sus trabajos anteriores. Esta fue la obra que marcó la completa madurez del pensamiento polÃtico-social de Félix Varela.
Su publicación comenzó en el 1835, año en que vio la luz el primer tomo, que trataba de la impiedad. El segundo tomo, dedicado a la superstición, se publicó en el año 1838, y el tercero, que debÃa referirse al fanatismo, no llegó a ver la luz, pues la indiferencia primero y la mala voluntad después, conque fueron recibidos los dos tomos iniciales de la obra, disuadieron a Varela de entregar a la imprenta el último.
En este tercer volumen de las obras varelianas también publicamos las cartas entre los dos grandes pensadores que abrieron la puerta al pensamiento moderno cubano: José de la Luz y Caballero y Félix Varela.
