Desde que el ser humano comenzó a preguntarse qué significa pensar, también imaginó la posibilidad de crear una inteligencia distinta de la propia. Durante siglos, esa idea perteneció al territorio de los mitos, las leyendas y la ciencia ficción. Hoy, sin embargo, ha abandonado las páginas de la imaginación y se encuentra en el centro de una de las mayores transformaciones tecnológicas de nuestra época.
La inteligencia artificial está dando origen a algo que hasta hace poco parecÃa imposible: sistemas capaces de analizar información, aprender de grandes cantidades de datos, reconocer patrones, producir contenidos, resolver problemas y colaborar con las personas en tareas que antes dependÃan exclusivamente de la capacidad intelectual humana.
No se trata simplemente de máquinas más rápidas o de programas más sofisticados. Estamos ante una nueva etapa en la relación entre el ser humano y la tecnologÃa.
Durante miles de años, nuestras herramientas ampliaron la fuerza de nuestros cuerpos. Después comenzaron a ampliar nuestros sentidos, nuestra capacidad de comunicación y nuestra memoria. Ahora estamos desarrollando herramientas capaces de ampliar determinadas funciones de nuestra inteligencia.
Ese cambio tiene consecuencias profundas.
Una máquina que puede calcular es una herramienta. Una máquina que puede aprender de los datos representa algo diferente. Un sistema que puede interpretar información, establecer relaciones, generar respuestas y adaptarse a nuevas situaciones comienza a ocupar un espacio que tradicionalmente considerábamos exclusivamente humano.
Y ese espacio apenas está comenzando a expandirse.
La revolución de la inteligencia artificial no afectará únicamente a los laboratorios tecnológicos. Su influencia alcanzará las escuelas, las universidades, las empresas, los hospitales, los gobiernos, los mercados financieros, los medios de comunicación y prácticamente todas las actividades en las que intervenga la información.
Millones de personas tendrán que aprender a trabajar con sistemas inteligentes. Algunas profesiones cambiarán profundamente. Otras desaparecerán o serán transformadas. Al mismo tiempo surgirán nuevas ocupaciones, nuevas industrias y nuevas formas de colaboración entre personas y máquinas.
Pero el desafÃo más importante no será económico.
Será humano.
Si una máquina puede escribir, analizar, diseñar, traducir, programar, investigar o tomar determinadas decisiones, tendremos que preguntarnos qué caracterÃsticas hacen verdaderamente especial a nuestra inteligencia.
Es la creatividad? La conciencia? La imaginación? La capacidad de sentir? La experiencia de estar vivos?
Tal vez descubramos que la inteligencia no es una propiedad exclusiva de una única especie, sino un fenómeno que puede manifestarse de formas diferentes.
También aparecerán preguntas mucho más difÃciles. Quién controlará las inteligencias artificiales más poderosas? Qué lÃmites deberán tener? Cómo evitaremos que sean utilizadas para manipular, vigilar o concentrar todavÃa más el poder? Qué sucederá cuando estas tecnologÃas sean capaces de mejorar progresivamente sus propias capacidades?
No todas estas preguntas tienen respuestas definitivas.
Y precisamente por eso es necesario formularlas.
La historia demuestra que las grandes revoluciones tecnológicas nunca transforman solamente las herramientas. Transforman también las sociedades que las utilizan. La agricultura modificó la organización humana. La escritura cambió la manera de conservar el conocimiento. La imprenta aceleró la difusión de las ideas. La industrialización transformó el trabajo. Internet alteró para siempre la comunicación.
La inteligencia artificial podrÃa representar un cambio de una magnitud comparable.
