Estaba en la cima de mi carrera como profesor de cirugÃa, cirujano experto y dedicado educador médico. Entonces me lesioné la espalda al levantar un cortacésped sobre la plataforma de una camioneta. Después de tres semanas de incesante dolor de espalda y piernas, me sometà a una resonancia magnética. Sospechaba que tenÃa una hernia discal. Diagnóstico equivocado, doctor. HabÃa sufrido una fractura patológica de la tercera vértebra lumbar, lo que significaba cáncer!
Las Parcas habÃan cortado una parte del hilo de mi vida. Me sometieron a una estabilización espinal de cinco horas y media, y la biopsia demostró la presencia de cáncer en la médula ósea: mieloma múltiple. No se puede curar esta enfermedad, sólo secuestrarla mediante quimioterapia, potentes dosis de esteroides y, tal vez, un trasplante de médula ósea de células madre. He experimentado todas estas indignidades y más mientras, al mismo tiempo, intentaba ayudar a mi mujer a recuperarse de un derrame cerebral.

AutobiografÃa: Albert H. O-Yurvati, DO, PhD, DFACOS, FICS, FAHA, se licenció en 1986 en la Facultad de Medicina Osteopática de Texas, en el Centro de Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad del Norte de Texas. Realizó su internado y residencia en cirugÃa general en el Tulsa Regional Medical Center de Tulsa, Oklahoma, y fue jefe de residentes su último año. A continuación, completó una residencia en cirugÃa cardiotorácica y vascular en el Deborah Heart and Lung Center de la Facultad de Medicina Robert Wood Johnson en Browns Mills, Nueva Jersey, donde también fue jefe de residentes. Está certificado por la AOA en cirugÃa cardiotorácica y vascular y en cirugÃa general, y es miembro del Colegio Americano de Cirujanos y del Colegio Internacional de Cirujanos.
