Vivimos en una época en la que la propaganda ha dejado de parecer propaganda.
Durante siglos, la propaganda estuvo asociada con discursos polÃticos, carteles, periódicos, consignas, campañas electorales, gobiernos y grandes organizaciones. Era relativamente sencillo reconocerla porque tenÃa una apariencia definida. ExistÃa alguien que querÃa convencernos de algo y producÃa un mensaje destinado a conseguirlo.
Hoy la situación es completamente diferente.
La propaganda puede aparecer mientras miramos un video de entretenimiento, leemos una noticia, revisamos una red social, buscamos un producto, conversamos con un chatbot o simplemente navegamos por Internet. Puede llegar disfrazada de opinión personal, recomendación, comentario, noticia, meme, fotografÃa o conversación aparentemente espontánea.
Y quizá lo más importante sea que muchas veces no sabemos que estamos siendo persuadidos.
La nueva propaganda no necesita obligarnos a creer.
Puede limitarse a conseguir que prestemos atención a determinadas cosas y no a otras.
Puede conseguir que sintamos miedo antes de analizar.
Puede provocar indignación antes de que conozcamos los hechos.
Puede mostrarnos repetidamente una idea hasta convertirla en familiar.
Puede presentarnos determinadas opiniones como mayoritarias y otras como marginales.
Puede adaptar el mensaje a nuestras emociones, nuestros intereses, nuestras frustraciones y nuestras vulnerabilidades.
La propaganda digital ha descubierto algo fundamental sobre la naturaleza humana: para influir sobre una persona no siempre es necesario controlar lo que piensa. En ocasiones basta con controlar aquello a lo que presta atención.
La atención es la puerta de entrada de la mente.
Aquello que ocupa nuestra atención repetidamente termina adquiriendo importancia. Lo que vemos todos los dÃas puede comenzar a parecernos normal. Lo que aparece constantemente puede parecer más verdadero. Lo que provoca emociones intensas puede permanecer más tiempo en nuestra memoria.
Por eso la batalla contemporánea por la influencia es, en gran medida, una batalla por la atención humana.
Las plataformas digitales lo han comprendido perfectamente.
Cada segundo que pasamos frente a una pantalla genera información. Cada clic, búsqueda, pausa, comentario, reacción y desplazamiento puede convertirse en una señal sobre nuestro comportamiento.
Nunca antes las sociedades habÃan producido semejante cantidad de información sobre las preferencias humanas.
Las empresas pueden conocer qué temas despiertan nuestra curiosidad, qué imágenes nos atraen, qué contenidos nos indignan, qué productos buscamos y qué mensajes consiguen mantenernos conectados.
Pero el fenómeno va mucho más allá de la publicidad.
Cuando una máquina conoce nuestras preferencias, puede utilizar ese conocimiento para seleccionar lo que veremos.
Y cuando puede seleccionar lo que veremos, también puede influir sobre el entorno psicológico en el que construimos nuestras opiniones.
Aquà comienza el verdadero problema.
La persona cree que está navegando libremente.
Sin embargo, su experiencia digital está organizada por sistemas que deciden qué aparece primero, qué se recomienda, qué se repite y qué queda prácticamente invisible.
La libertad de elección continúa existiendo, pero se produce dentro de un entorno previamente diseñado.
