En 1520, MartÃn Lutero formuló una de las afirmaciones más célebres y profundas de la Reforma:
El cristiano es un señor libre sobre todas las cosas y no está sujeto a nadie. El cristiano es un siervo dispuesto a servir en todas las cosas y está sujeto a todos.
Cómo puede una persona ser completamente libre y, al mismo tiempo, sierva de todos? En La libertad cristiana, Lutero desarrolla esta aparente contradicción y presenta el corazón de su comprensión del evangelio: el ser humano no alcanza la justicia delante de Dios mediante sus propias obras, sino que la recibe gratuitamente por la fe en Cristo.
Esta libertad, sin embargo, no conduce a la indiferencia ni al egoÃsmo. Liberado de la necesidad de conquistar su salvación, el cristiano puede entregarse espontáneamente al servicio del prójimo. La fe lo eleva hacia Dios; el amor lo conduce nuevamente hacia los demás.
