Este libro propone un recorrido histórico y cultural por el origen y la evolución de las supersticiones. En lugar de reunir anécdotas aisladas, sigue el camino por el que objetos, números, animales, presagios y rituales adquirieron significado, cambiaron al pasar de una sociedad a otra y llegaron hasta la vida contemporánea.
El recorrido comienza con la necesidad humana de reconocer patrones y buscar explicaciones frente a lo imprevisible. Después se adentra en Egipto y Mesopotamia, el mundo grecorromano y la Europa medieval, antes de explorar creencias relacionadas con la suerte, la mala fortuna y las tradiciones de distintas regiones del mundo.
A lo largo de sus páginas aparecen la herradura, el espejo roto, el trébol de cuatro hojas, el mal de ojo, el viernes trece y el simbolismo de ciertos números, junto con muchas otras prácticas conocidas. Cada caso se aborda con cautela, diferenciando lo que permiten sostener las fuentes históricas de las explicaciones populares surgidas con posterioridad.
La parte final examina por qué estas ideas continúan vivas. La búsqueda de patrones, el sesgo de confirmación, la memoria selectiva, la transmisión familiar y la difusión a través de internet ayudan a comprender cómo una coincidencia puede convertirse en relato y un relato en costumbre.
Una lectura para quienes sienten curiosidad por la historia cultural, el folclore, las tradiciones y los mecanismos que hacen perdurar las creencias. Un viaje por aquello que heredamos del pasado y seguimos reconociendo, a veces sin saber de dónde procede.
