ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
THE ILIAD AND THE ODYSSEY, THE GREAT FOUNDATIONAL CLASSICS OF WESTERN LITERATURE, COME TOGETHER IN THIS LIMITED EDITION FEATURING LUXURY FINISHES AND DECORATED EDGES, ESSENTIAL FOR BOOK LOVERS AND GREAT LIBRARIES.
SYNOPSIS THE ILIAD
Sing, O goddess, the wrath of Achilles; that deadly wrath which brought countless sorrows upon the Achaeans and sent many brave souls of heroes down to Hades.
The Iliad, composed in the 8th century BC, recounts a Mycenaean legend set in the 13th century BC, a heroic age dominated by warfare, intense individualism, and the pursuit of wealth and glory. The Iliad tells an episode from the epic story of the city of Troy, or Ilium. It is the poem of the wrath of Achilles, son of a mortal and a goddess, and the greatest of the Greek warriors, driven by his quest for heroism and desire for revenge. It is the poem of a great war affecting countless human lives, victims of the personal conflict of a small group of heroes in their struggle for power. It is the song of pain and suffering, of the collapse of values and a refined, aristocratic way of life that ends in death or slavery. Yet it is also a celebration of beauty, the fascination of action, and the achievement of glory.
SYNOPSIS THE ODYSSEY
Cyclops! You ask my honored name and I will tell it to you; but give me the guest-gift you promised. My name is Nobody, and Nobody is what my mother, my father, and all my companions call me.
Composed, like The Iliad, in hexameter verse, it brings together numerous folk tales and legends that were adapted and woven into the epic narrative. Thus, while the central theme of The Iliad is Achilles' revenge and its outcome in war, in The Odyssey the hero's return home is told with masterful artistry, as the highest aim is to provide greater enjoyment through the telling of beautiful stories.
