Y simplemente digo: pasen y vean . ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The new book by Rosa Montero, winner of the National Prize for Spanish Literature
Reality elevated to the ranks of literature
The Atocha massacre, an attempted coup d'état, the flooding of Riaño, the Pope's visit, Miguel RÃos's Rock and RÃos tour, the trial of the accused killers of El Nani, the drug epidemic, terrorism... The 1980s were a tumultuous decade in Spain, as the country made the transition from dictatorship and collectively embraced democratization and modernization. As evidenced by this book, it was a period that was at once turbulent, multi-faceted, violent and hopeful. True Tales is a compilation of reports and accounts published by Rosa Montero, one of the most important voices in Spanish journalism and literature, in Spain's El PaÃs newspaper between 1978 and 1988. Using sophisticated literary techniques, and several decades removed from the urgency that propelled them, these pieces read more like fiction today, marking their transition into literature. As Montero explains in the prologue: These accounts transport us to far-off territories. There are other worlds, but they are in this one, as Éluard said. They are sometimes so strange, so unbelievable, that I feel a little like a carnival barker for a sideshow like the Snake Man or the Bearded Lady... And that's really all I'm doing: standing at the door and saying, 'come inside; see for yourselves.'
