In his 42 years of life, Roberto Arlt was witness to one and a half world wars, a successful Communist revolution, and various failed attempts; he saw the most important crisis to hit the capitalist system and understood the ferocity of the Holocaust. But most important, perhaps, is that Arlt formed part of the generation that first faced the downfall of the notion of infinite progress and of unrestricted innovation, confronting these facts along with the brutal violence that marked the early 20th century. Arlt's poetics of disenchantment and disillusion are the most distinctive aspects of his stories and etchings, perhaps the works that best represent the period.

En los cuarenta y dos años que duró su vida, Roberto Arlt fue testigo de una guerra mundial y media, una revolución comunista triunfante (la soviética) y varios intentos revolucionarios fallidos; pudo ver la crisis más importante del sistema capitalista hasta ese momento y pudo entrever la feroz dimensión del genocidio nazi. Pero lo más importante, quizás, sea el hecho de que formó parte de la generación que se enfrentó al fracaso de la idea de progreso indefinido, una generación de hombres y mujeres que pasó de la confianza ciega en el avance irrestricto de la ciencia y, por qué no también, del bienestar que prometía el pujante capitalismo, a la desazón de confrontar esa promesa con las masacres que signaron esa primera parte del siglo. No resulta extraño, entonces, que la poética de Arlt, poética del desencanto y la desilusión, sean los rasgos distintos (y brillantes) de sus cuentos y aguafuertes, acaso las obras que más fielmente lo representan.
