Cómo debe tomar decisiones, escoger consejeros, administrar recursos y distribuir responsabilidades? Qué peligros acompañan a una posición de liderazgo? Qué debe hacer cuando las cargas parecen superar sus fuerzas?
Las páginas de este libro permiten escuchar la respuesta de Elena G. de White a muchas de estas preguntas. Sus consejos presentan al presidente como un dirigente que necesita buscar primero la sabidurÃa de Dios, cultivar una experiencia espiritual profunda, actuar con humildad y firmeza de principios, reconocer los talentos de otros y trabajar en consejo con sus colaboradores. El liderazgo que aparece en estos escritos está lejos del ejercicio arbitrario de la autoridad: el presidente debe servir como una ayuda espiritual para las iglesias y procurar que obreros y miembros aprendan a depender de Dios antes que de la voluntad de un ser humano.
La compilación también aborda asuntos eminentemente prácticos de la administración denominacional. Entre ellos se encuentran la selección de colaboradores y consejeros, la relación entre el presidente y quienes administran las finanzas, el funcionamiento de las juntas, la delegación de responsabilidades, la supervisión de diezmos y ofrendas, el cuidado de los obreros, la necesidad de consultar con los ministros y el deber de evitar decisiones apresuradas. Se presentan además consejos sobre la duración del servicio presidencial, la conveniencia de los cambios de responsabilidad y la evaluación de quienes ocupan posiciones de liderazgo.
Una parte importante de la obra está dedicada a las advertencias. Ella se pronuncia contra la centralización excesiva, el espÃritu controlador, la autosuficiencia, el autoritarismo, las confabulaciones administrativas, el uso imprudente de los recursos, la interferencia en responsabilidades delegadas y cualquier intento de convertir al presidente en conciencia de pastores, obreros o miembros. Estas declaraciones invitan a examinar el liderazgo a la luz del modelo de Cristo, cuya autoridad estuvo acompañada de mansedumbre y humildad.
El libro comienza, además, con una selección de promesas para quienes llevan grandes responsabilidades. Frente al cansancio, las decisiones difÃciles, los campos problemáticos y las limitaciones humanas, estos escritos recuerdan al dirigente que la obra pertenece a Dios. Él ofrece sabidurÃa, fortaleza, dirección y ayuda a quienes lo buscan. El presidente no ha sido llamado a llevar solo las cargas de una asociación.
